Not sure which of these fits you? That's normal at this stage. Most students find their direction through the projects they work on and the internships they take, not by deciding in advance. What matters is building the foundation that keeps all these doors open.

Is AI the Right Direction for You?This is the question worth sitting with before anything else, and it deserves an honest answer.
Are you comfortable building a foundation in mathematics, linear algebra, probability, statistics, and calculus? You don't need to be exceptional at these before you start. But you need to be willing to develop them as the programme progresses, because AI is built on them.
Are you curious about how things work at a systems level? The students who do well in AI programmes are usually the ones who want to understand why something works, not just that it works. A student who starts first year wondering why a recommendation algorithm surfaces certain results is the same student who, by third year, is building one, and knows exactly why it behaves the way it does. That progression is what four years of genuine curiosity looks like.
Are you comfortable with a field that's still being defined? AI careers in 2030 will look meaningfully different from AI careers today. If that feels like an opportunity rather than a risk, that instinct is worth trusting.
If your honest answers are yes, AI is worth pursuing seriously. If you're not sure yet, that's also fine. Open Google Colab, it's free, and run a basic Python ML script on a sample dataset. Watch what it does. If that process makes you want to understand what's happening under the surface, that's a signal worth paying attention to. Clarity about AI usually comes from touching it, not from reading about it.
