Lady with a Lamp……….
Two centuries later we still fondly remember Florence Nightingale and commemorate the day for the service she rendered and gave birth to an essential service for mankind.
Way back when the nation was warring and brought many injured soldiers to be tended this lady organised and trained people to serve them. At night she would carry a lamp in her hand searching among the pile of soldiers to find those who were still alive but escaped the notice of others. She brought them to the temporary clinics/hospital tents to give them a new lease of life.
She was the pioneer of modern nursing and not only did she train people to care but also laid stress on hygiene, which is an important factor in recouping of a patient. This noble service in which she trained to make it into an organised sector has seen many occasions where the services was vital. The World Wars and innumerable such instances have been witnessed to have given their services.
The present scenario of pandemic is something which brings in new challenges. It is more than the doctors; the nursing staff are working on a war path. Their presence in the hospitals surrounded and exposed to constant threat of becoming a victim themselves. The torturous condition to be continuously covered for long hours is a real test of the patience.
The silver lining is the number of patients who are recovering is a commendable number. The crown of this recovered patient list undoubtedly rests on head of the Nursing staff.
Salute to all respected nurses fighting as a frontline warriors in COVID 19, a deadly pandemic.
